B'NAI MITZVAH on page 60 Retainers are a very integral segment in orthodontic treatment. They are used at the conclusion of the "braces" portion of orthodontics. When the braces are removed, the teeth have the ability for movement, and retainers limit this movement. It is especially important to wear the retainers immediately after braces are removed, for at this Nelson Hersh DDS MS Licensed Specialist time the teeth are most likely to shift. There are many different kinds of retainers, and one is decided upon depending upon the individual. There are retainers that are a removable clear plastic covering to the teeth and are very thin. These retainers are hardly noticeable. Another type is a small flexible wire that is attached to the back surface of the teeth, and is not removable. These make oral hygiene more difficult but are obviously less likely to be lost. The most common type of retainer is called a Hawley retainer, which is a removable acrylic appliance. In our office we have found the kids like this type the most, as we allow the patient to pick any color, including neon, incorporate glitter and colored designs. We even have the ability to place a decal or picture inside the retainer. Kids have phenomenal imaginations and have had retainers with Pokemon, Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, university logos, Nike or Tommy Hilfiger logos, or even pictures of their pets incorporated in their retainers. We have found when the kids are included in designing the retainers, they enjoy them more and wearing them is more fun. Parents appreciate this!
