Comings and Goings

The hit HBO series Deadwood, fea-
turing the Jewish character Sol Star
and created by NYPD Blue co-cre-
ator DAVID MILCH, returns
March 6 (with the DVD of the first
season out March 1).
Meanwhile, NYPD Blue ends its
12-year run on March 1, to be
replaced on March 8 by another
ABC series by Blue co-creator
STEVE BOCHCO (yes, he's
Jewish).
It's called Blind Justice and is
about a police detective who tries to
keep on working after being blind-
ed by a gunshot. The beautiful
RENA SOFER co-stars as the
detective's wife. Let's hope that
Sofer, the daughter of an Orthodox
rabbi, ends her jinx of being in
short-lived series.
Everybody Loves Raymond, the hit
CBS show, has already shot the
series-ending episode, to be aired
this May. There's some talk that
BRAD GARRETT, who plays Ray's
brother, Robert, may have his own
spin-off series. However, the actor
told the Philadelphia Inquirer that
he hasn't been approached.

In any event, Garrett said he
wouldn't do it unless Raymond co-
creator PHIL ROSENTHAL wrote
it and the supporting cast, includ-
ing MONICA HORAN who plays
his TV wife, was in it.
Horan, who is Jewish and is
Rosenthal's real-life wife, told the
paper: "I'd love to do it." So ...
maybe.

Fun Fact To Share

To the surprise of some, the big-
selling rock band Maroon 5 won
the Best New Artist Grammy earlier
this month. Besides lead singer
ADAM LEVINE, another Jewish
band member has emerged.
ROGER FRIEDMAN of Fox News
reports that drummer RYAN
DUSICK is the nephew of well-
known Jewish actress MICHELE
LEE (Knots Landing). Lee was born
Michele Dusick and is active in the
Jewish community.
So, it's an interesting intergenera-
tional factoid: Young people can tell
their elders about Maroon 5, and
older people can explain to them
who Michele Lee is.

Oy Vey!

For a while, it looked like Michael
Jackson's trial would proceed with-
out a significant Jewish presence
(unlike O.J.'s trial). This made me
happy.
Yes, the singer had a Jewish
lawyer for a time, but the "gloved
one" fired him. Yes, Jackson's ex-
wife and the mother of his children
Paris and Prince Michael, DEBBIE
ROWE, converted to Judaism in
the 1970s, but she doesn't seem to
figure much in the trial.
But now both sides have subpoe-
naed a bunch of "showbiz Hebrews"
as character witnesses. Appearing
for t he prosecution is former child
star COREY FELDMAN, who says
that Jackson showed him nude pho-
tos when Feldman was 14. Big
names on the defense list include
magicians DAVID BLAINE and
URI GELLER as well as talk-show
hosts LARRY KING and MAURY

POVICH.

While it's doubtful that star wit-
nesses will save Jackson, it now
appears that they could round up a
courthouse minyan with little
notice. Too bad. ❑
