ARTHUR M. COHEN, 70, of

SIDNEY J. DICKSTEIN, 70, of
West Bloomfield, died Feb. 4, 2005.
He was a labor relations consultant.
Mr. Dickstein was born in
Rochester, N.Y.,
but grew up in
Pontiac. He attend-
ed University of
Michigan and then
Eastern Michigan
University, where
he received a bach-
elor's in history
and secondary edu-
cation and a mas-
ter's in school
administration.
A sports enthusiast, he excelled in
table tennis as a youth. His love of
golf continued throughout his life.
Mr. Dickstein began teaching in
Hazel Park in 1958 and became
involved with negotiating contracts
for teachers, seeking to improve
salaries and working conditions. In
1971, he left teaching to become part
of the first wave of negotiators and
union advocates with the Michigan
Education Association. He bargained
for workers in Avondale, Ferndale,
Oak Park, Troy, Clawson and Hazel
Park school districts and assisted col-
leagues out of state.
Later in his 25-year career with the
MEA, he and his wife, Cynthia, pro-
vided training for student teachers on
employment and professional issues.
They also led seminars in contract

language development for union lead-
ers and members.
Mr. Dickstein served as an usher at
Temple Beth El and belonged to its
brotherhood.
Mr. Dickstein is survived by his
wife, Cynthia Dickstein; daughter
and son-in-law, Sheri Dickstein and
Ira Silverman of Calif.; son and
daughter-in-law, Gary and Shelley
Dickstein of Ohio; grandchildren,
Aaron and Abigail Dickstein, Alexis
Silverman; brother and sister-in-law,
Kenneth and Arvene "Kim" Dickstein
of West Bloomfield; sister and broth-
er-in-law, Judith Winkelman Seplow
and Richard Seplow of Ariz.; former
wife, Elaine Dickstein; _brother-in-law
and sister-in-law, Leonard and
Elizabeth Kata and mother-in-law,
Mary Kata.
He was the devoted son of the late
Herman and the late Bebe Dickstein
and the dear son-in-law of the late
Leonard Kata.

SOPHIE GARBER, 88, of

Southfield, died Feb. 1, 2005.
Mrs. Garber was born in 1917 and
grew up in Detroit. An outgoing, gre-
garious woman, she easily made
friends, some of
whom she retained
all of her life.
She and her hus-
band, Sam, whom
she met at the
Omega Social
Group in 1934,
were a great team.
Sam passed away in
1970.
A multi-talented
woman, she won a first prize in a
citywide writing contest sponsored by
the Detroit News. She also wrote and
read eulogies for friends and relatives.
Her needlepoint work and decorated
ceramics gave her much pleasure.
Mrs. Garber was close to her broth-
er Sol Brown and sisters Betty Starr
and Frida Samoss. She enjoyed travel-
ing with her devoted companion of
34 years, Alex Nemoff.
She volunteered in the community,
including the Jewish War Veterans.
She loved to sing and belonged to the
Rose Morgan singing group, which
performed at nursing homes, commu-
nity centers and synagogues.
Sophie Garber is survived by her
son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Paul
and Nancy Garber of Huntington
Woods; daughters, Beverly Garber of

California, Sandra Berlin of
California; sister, Frieda Samoss of
Oak Park; grandchildren, Joshua
