SHOPPING THAT MAKES SENSE

pions in the wider Arab world.
"Israel deserves to live in peace in the
Middle East and the Jewish people
deserve the respect of their neighbors."
"We have been very clear that incite-
ment cannot be ignored, that it is not
possible simultaneously to say that you
want a peace between the Israelis and
the Palestinians that is lasting, and at the
same time ignore some of the most hor-
rific caricatures of Israelis or anti-
Semitism in any form," she said.
That appeared to be a clear message to
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the
host of Tuesday's summit, and to the
Egyptian media, which often is charged
with incitement against Israel.
Egypt is hosting unilateral cease-fire
talks between Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
Under the road map, Abbas is obliged to
dismantle the groups, but has said that
he will negotiate with them rather than
take them on.
Israel, for its part, already has scaled
back its military operations in the West
Bank and Gaza Strip as a gesture of
goodwill to Abbas, and the Bush admin-
istration apparently is content with this
entente for the time being.
For now, all sides appear ready to do
whatever is necessary to implement
Sharon's plan to withdraw Israeli troops
and settlers from Gaza this summer with
minimum casualties.
"For the first time in a long rime,
there is hope in our region for a better
future for our children and our grand-
children," Sharon said at the summit.
"We have to proceed carefully. It is a
very fragile opportunity. Only by break-
ing the back of terror and violence will
we build peace.
Abbas said, "The calm that will prevail
in our lands starting from today is the
beginning of a new era." ❑

Sign Of Hope

The Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit issued a statement
following the Israeli-Palestinian summit
meeting on Tuesday in Egypt.
"We share in the hope for peace
between Israelis and Palestinians and,
more generally, the growing roots of
democracy in that region," said David
Gad-Harf, executive director of the
JCCouncil.
He reminded that we're early in the
process of restarting peace talks — with
"a new Bush term, new Sharon coali-
tion, new Palestinian leader."
He urged Abbas to follow his words
— "actions to eliminate terror, consoli-
date power, reform institutions, improve
Palestinian life."
