The Congregation Shaarey Zedek
Sisterhood will marking a milestone this
year, 100 years of service to the congre-
gation. Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood was
also one of the founding members of
the Women's League for Conservative
Judaism, in 1918.
The celebration will begin with
Sisterhood Shabbat, Saturday, Feb. 12,
at the Southfield sanctuary. At this serv-
ice, past presidents will be honored with
a group aliyah to mark the 100 years
and their contributions to sisterhood.
The occasion will be celebrated at a
birthday party in the fall, where the
achievements of this group of women
will be recounted.
Sisterhood Shabbat co-chairs include
past presidents Ruthe Goldstein,
Marjorie Saulson, and Helene Cherrin
along with President-elect Ronna Ross
and Social Vice President Jacqui Elkus.
Sisterhood President Joanne Robinson
will deliver the dvar Torah. Other par-
ticipants include Debbie Balkin, Ann
Baruch, Rabbi Lauren Berkun, Joyce
Blum, Marcia Boxman, Elsie Deutch,
Susan Feber, Jeri Fishman, Bernice
Friedman, Mickey Gold, Miriam

Death, Dying Addressed
National Council of Jewish Women
Greater Detroit Section in conjunction
with Congregation Shaarey Zedek will
present a four-part series tided "The
Jewish Response to Death and Dying."
Each session will be held 7 p.m. at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek West
Bloomfield, B'nai Israel Center, 4200
Walnut Lake Road in West Bloomfield.
The first session, "When a Jew
Dies," will be held Thursday, March
17. The speaker will be Dr. Samuel
Heilman, sociology professor at LUNY.
On Tuesday, March 29, Rabbi
Lauren Berkun of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek will speak on "What Do
Jews Believe About the Afterlife?" On
Tuesday, April 5, Rabbi Bunny
Freedman of the Jewish Hospice and
Chaplaincy Network will speak on
"Caring at the End of Life: Our
Community's Response."
The last of the series will be held
Thursday, April 21, with David
Techner of the Ira Kaufman Chapel in
southfield; he will speak on "Children
and the Grieving Process."

Emanu-El Hosts Scholar
Rabbi David Saperstein, director of the
Religious Action Center of Reform
Judaism for more 30 years, will be
Temple Emanu-El's scholar in residence
during the weekend
of Feb. 25.
Rabbi Saperstein
is an attorney and
teaches seminars in
both First
Amendment
Church-State Law
and in Jewish Law
at Georgetown
Rabbi Saperstein University Law
School in
Washington.
Rabbi Saperstein will speak at Erev
Shabbat services at 8 p.m. on "Being
the Hands of God; Jewish Social Justice
at a Time of Crisis and Opportunity"
"Israel: Its Three Most Vital
Challenges — Peace, Equality and
Religious Freedom" will be his topic at
a lunch and learn 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb.
26. The charge for the lunch is $12.
At 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Rabbi
Saperstein will discuss "The New Anti-
Semitism."
