ulius Lester, the African-American
son of a Methodist minister, dis-
jr covered as an adult that he had
Jewish ancestry. When he investigated
his genealogy, he learned that the Jewish
members of his family had died, inter-
married or assimilated. He formally con-
verted to Judaism in 1982 and described
his experiences in a 1988 autobiographi-
cal memoir, Lovesong, in which he sadly
asserted that he was the last Jew in his
family.
Lester was exposed to racial discrimi-
nation when he grew up in the South
during the 1940s and 1950s. He gradu-
ated from Fisk University in Nashville,
majoring in English, and then became
active in the civil rights movement.
Originally a musician, Lester recorded
two albums and performed with Pete
Seeger, Phil Ochs and Judy Collins. His
first book, The 12-String Guitar As
Played by Leadbelly, was written with
Seeger.
Lester hosted and produced a radio
show in New York, gaining notoriety in

1968 when he aired an anti-Semitic
poem. Subsequently, his attitudes
changed substantially, and he publicly
condemned black leaders for being anti-
Semitic.
His criticism of James Baldwin's anti-
Semitic remarks in 1988 led to his being
ousted from the University of
Massachusetts Afro-American Studies
Department, where he had been a pro-
fessor since 1971. He joined the univer-
sity's Judaic Studies Department and
remained there until he retired in 2004.
He describes himself as a
"Reconservadox" Jew, and he serves as
the lay religious leader of an independ-
ent congregation, Beth El Synagogue, in
St. Johnsbury, Vt.
These singular biographical details
enable one to better understand Lester's
latest book, The Autobiography of God
(St. Martin's Press; $23.95). All told, he
has published more than 30 books for
children and adults, as well as numerous
essays and reviews.
The new book is his sixth novel for
adults and young adults. It has many

ou don't have to be Jewish to
participate in seders at the home
of Rabbi Jonathan Kligler. Kim
and Reggie Harris have attended for
years.
The Kligler family seders are musical
events with everyone joining in. It's a
comfortable arrangement for the
Harrises, an African American folk-
music duo, who became longtime
friends as well as guests.
The rabbi, spiritual leader of Kehillat
Lev Shalem, the Woodstock Jewish
Congregation in upstate New York,
enjoyed the seder music so much that
he suggested and initiated a recording
based on the experiences at the holiday
meals. It is being released this month as
Let My People Go! A Jewish & African-
American Celebration of Freedom on the
Appleseed label with a Web site for
orders (www.appleseedrec.com ).
"We sing freedom songs at our seders,
and we sing freedom songs on the
recording," says Kligler, 49, a
Reconstructionist Jew. "The story of the
Exodus is shared by Jews and African
Americans. There are so many things
that divide us, so it's good to share expe-
riences that can bring us together."
Tracks on the CD intertwine songs
from the Passover Haggadah with tradi-
tional black spirituals to carry the ideals
of equality and freedom. "B'chol Dor
va'Dor" ("In Every Generation") is
joined with "I'm On My Way." "Ani
Ma'amin" ("I Believe") is sung with "We
Shall Overcome."
Some tracks set aside the music in
favor of spoken accounts that recall
watershed events in the civil rights
movement.
Juanita Nelson describes her desegre-
gation battles in Washington, D.C.
Rabbi Arthur Waskow tells of life-
changing encounters with Martin
Luther King Jr. at the 1964 Democratic
National Convention. Musician and
humanitarian activist Pete Seeger
recounts the evolution of "We Shall
Overcome," and folk radio program
host Sonny Ochs recalls her late brother
Phil's commitment to justice and equali-
ty in many of his songs.
Also on the recording are folk musi-
cians Bill and Livia Vanaver, keyboardist
David Sancious of Bruce Springsteen's E
Street Band, bassist Tony Levin of King
