ON THE STAGE

Perhaps the most famous clip from
Carson's show was the segment in which
ED AMES, then playing a Native
American on TV's Daniel Boone, threw
an axe into a figure of a man painted on
a wooden backboard. The axe landed in
the figure's groin area.
Johnny brilliantly ad-
libbed, "I didn't even
know you were Jewish."
The funny "back story" is
that Ed Ames really is
Jewish.

Wicked Witch in the hit musical
Wicked is the big-voiced SHOSHANA
BEAN, a youngish veteran of the New
York musical and cabaret theater.
Bean kind of reminds me of LANIE
KAZAN, when the singer/actress was
much younger and, um, thinner.
Bean says on her Web site that
she is a Jewish girl who "improba-
bly" grew up in rural Washington
State and Portland, Ore.
Meanwhile, Menzel has finally
signed on to co-star in the film
production of the hit musical Rent.
It begins filming this spring. ❑
