drinks, not straight shots. As part of
this routine, he points out he favors
the legalization of marijuana.
On the road for 47 weeks a year,
mainly at school campuses,
Diamond, who is single, was sur-
prised by the comparatively small
turnout at Wayne. "I usually per-
form before audiences of 500 to
1,000, so I feel my brand of humor
has been successful," he said.
A native of San Jose, Calif., he
now lives in Milwaukee, Wis., after
falling in love with the city while
playing bass there in a former rock
band called Salty the Pocketknife.
Diamond got his first show busi-
ness break quite accidentally, at the
age of 8. While his mother was
shopping at a mall, he posed as a
store mannequin, drawing crowds of
shoppers and laughter. A photogra-
pher helped him land modeling jobs
after that, and, at age 11, he joined
Saved by the Bell (where viewers also
watched fellow Jewish castmate and
former Michigander Elizabeth
Berkley).
"I went through six auditions
before every conceivable executive
and sponsor at NBC, and won the
role over 5,000 other kids," he
recalls about his Bell experience.
Diamond's family was not too reli-
gious, but he celebrates the Jewish
holidays as best he can while tour-
ing. He likes to think he's a comedi-
an who happens to be Jewish, rather
than a Jewish-type comedian.
A great fan of the new breed of
comics, he's also a keen student of
some of the old-timers, like Harold
Lloyd, Buster Keaton and Jimmy
Durante. Diamond also is a boxing
and wrestling buff and loves to play
chess and work on the computer.
He'll try his adult-type of humor
again in the Detroit area when he
appears at Joey's Comedy Club in
Dearborn Friday and Saturday, Feb.
