As of Feb. 1, Gift of Life Michigan confirms 36 of the 2,809 Michiganians on transplant lists this year have received donations. Six have died wait- ing. Fifty-seven wait for new hearts. There is no cost to the families of donors and the body is not disfigured from donation. According to the United Network for Organ Sharing in Virginia, as of Feb. 2, there are 255 transplant centers in the United States. With each operating one or more organ transplant programs, there is a total of 861 programs in the United States. Of the 135 heart trans- plant programs, the three in Michigan are at Children's Hospital of Michigan and Henry Ford Hospital, both in Detroit, and U-M Medical Center in Ann Arbor. ❑ Register To Donate • To register online, go to: www.IA0D.org and click on "donate • According Sheree Hardrick of the International Association for Organ Donation in Detroit, every weekend, at least one hospital in Michigan holds a blood drive, with a booth set up for organ donation registering. The Saturn National Donor Day will include a blood drive, bone marrow typing and opportunity to register as an organ donor from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15, and Wednesday, Feb. 16, at the GM Renaissance Center in Detroit. Many area Saturn dealerships will also host donor drives during that same week. Check individual sites for dates and times. • Sign up to donate your organs at Secretary of State offices. A sticker is then placed on the potential donor's driver's license indicating they are regis- tered with Michigan's Organ and Tissue Donor Registry. It is important for those who have indicated their wishes to be an organ donor — through a will, document of gift, drivers license or state identifica- tion card — to be aware that, in Michigan, these methods do not place the individual's name on the organ donor registry. Potential donors need also to register with Michigan's Organ and Tissue Donor Registry. The IAOD also suggests that if those who sign a donor card should share their wishes with family members. For information on registering to be a donor, call Sheree Hardrick at IAOD at (313) 745-0844, or call the United Network for Organ Sharing at (804) 782-4800, or access the Web site at www.unos.org.
