T
he American Committee for
the Weizmann Institute of
Science will host a family day
of fun and science at the Detroit
Science Center on Sunday, Feb. 27, to
benefit the Weizmann Institute of
Science.
The cost of $100 per family (up to

sion, a reserved-seating IMAX show
and admission to the newest exhibit,

Exhibit," and light refreshments.
Adults must accompany all children.
The Weizmann Institute of Science
in Rehovot, Israel, is a center for basic
interdisciplinary scientific research and
graduate study addressing crucial
problems in technology, medicine,
health, energy, agriculture and the
environment.
Founded in 1944, the American
Committee develops philanthropic
support for the Weizmann Institute of
Science in Israel. Institute successes
include:
• Addressing bone marrow trans-
plantation between incompatible
donors by using a hormone to mobi-
lize bone marrow cells of leukemia
patients and "bubble" children.
• Pioneering use of MRI as a non-
invasive means of diagnosing cancer.
• Developing methods with col-
leagues from overseas for encrypting
and decrypting information, prompt-
ing development of "smart cards" that
limit satellite broadcast reception to
paid subscribers.
• Developing Copaxone and Rebif,
two FDA-approved multiple sclerosis
drugs.
• Discovering that stem cells can
yield the creation of human kidneys in
mice.
• Developing new wheat varieties
that provide nearly 40 percent higher
yields per growing area unit; hybrid
cucumber seeds without hand pollina-
tion; and a solution to parasitic weeds
that ravage crops worldwide, particu-
larly in Africa. ❑
