ien Robin Schwartz moved from
Philadelphia to the Detroit area to start
her career eight years ago as a FOX2 News
reporter, her mother, in Philadelphia, called the
Young Adult Division of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit. Mom wanted Robin on
YAD's mailing list so she could meet new people.
Robin carved time out of her busy schedule to
join YAD and get involved as a volunteer. She also
wanted to meet new people.
Soon, she met YAD director Jonathan Goldstein.
Later, at a YAD event, she talked with Jonathan
more; and soon they arranged a first date — a
University of Michigan football game in Ann Arbor
in October 2002. Even though they don't remember
whom the Wolverines played that day or even if
they won, the first date went well although "we
haven't been back to a Michigan game since," he
said.
Jonathan admitted that he didn't know Robin
through her high-profile TV job. At the time, he
didn't watch local news.
After that first date, the two began seeing each
other every weekend. They were married in
Philadelphia last Oct. 24.
Besides meeting her future mate at YAD, Robin
continued to get more involved in the organization,
overseeing its social committee, serving on its board
of directors and traveling to Kiev in the former

ership program.
Back home, Robin wanted to use her creativity and
quilting skills to make their wedding day special as well
to have something to pass down to their children.
She created their chuppah, using pieces of four talli-
tot brought back from Israel by her parents, Linda and
David Schwartz, along with matching fabric — after
consulting with an Orthodox rabbi to make sure she
could cut up tallitot. "I kept the fringes for good luck,"
she said.
Her parents surprised her at the wedding reception
by inviting 18 friends who had received Robin's hand-
made quilts during the previous 10 years. The recipi-
ents paraded the quilts around the bride and groom in
what her father described as an expression being
"wrapped in the warmth of your embrace."
