supplies.
The HAF is a nonprofit tax-exempt
grant making institution. Its mission is
to fund organizations that provide
services and assistance to groups of
individuals and specific populations
that are, or have been, victims of acts
against humanity or natural disasters.
HAF is funded by donations from a
variety of sources including individu-
als, corporations and private founda-
tions and is managed by a board of
trustees that also serves as final author-
ity on grant-making decisions.

Childbirth Class Offered
Congregation Shaarey Zedek will offer
a childbirth education class, Lernazel
Tov!, as a six-part series open to the
community.
Classes will run from 6:45-9:15
p.m. Feb. 28-April 4 at the syna-
gogue's Applebaum Center for Jewish
Living in West Bloomfield.
The labor and delivery course will
be taught by childbirth educators.
Rabbi Lauren Berkun is facilitator of
the series. There will be medical and
safety lessons, teachings on pregnancy,
baby naming, ritual circumcision, par-
enting and creating a Jewish home.
JAMD Awarded Grant
The Jewish Academy of Metropolitan
Detroit received an AVI Chai Judaic
Preparatory Track grant to support its
Judaic studies track for beginners.
The AVI CHAI Foundation, a New
York-based private foundation dedicat-
ed to supporting and encouraging the
growing Jewish day school movement,
supports the creation and expansion of
Judaic preparatory tracks in Jewish
high schools that meet the founda-
tion's eligibility requirements.
JAMD's winter open house will be
Sunday afternoon, Feb. 6, at the
Jewish Community Center in West
