The highlight of the overseas travel, he
said, was the visit to a certain ambas-
sador's residence in Oslo, Norway —
where his group stopped off for a kosher
hot dog on the way back from Russia.
Then-U.S. Ambassador David
Hermelin of Bingham Farms told the
group, "In Norway, it's great to be king,
but it's better to be ambassador."
Davidoff has nothing but praise for
those who worked with him. "I've never
worked with a harder-working group of
people than at Federation," he said.
"Together with Bob Aronson, we built a
core management team who all are com-
mitted to do whatever it takes.
"I used to joke there are only two
rules in Federation life," Davidoff added.
"The first is that there are more than 24
hours in a day, and the first 24 belong to
Federation."
Federation president Peter Alter said
Davidoff brought a unique set of skills.
"He was steeped in financial knowl-
edge, had great administrative skills and
had an outstanding presence to go with
it," Alter said.
He said the search for Davidoff's
replacement is just beginning.
"We won't be able to replace him in
30 days," Alter said. "In the short term,
different people will pick up the slack."
Long term, he said, Federation is
looking at different models.
David Page, Federation president
when Davidoff was hired, said Davidoff
built a stronger administrative organiza-
tion during his 12 years.
"While it is a big loss in the commu-
nity, he doesn't leave as big a hole as he
would have left if he hadn't discharged
his responsibility and put in place the
right kind of people," Page said.
"Federation's not a machine that lost its
driver. It's a well-oiled machine. When
he steps aside, the machine is still run-
ning."
Davidoff agreed.
"The institution has been here for 100
years, everything finds its own natural
equilibrium, and that will happen here
without much trouble," he said. El
