JAMES "JACK" SHERMAN, 83,

former Detroiter of Laguna Woods,
Calif., died Jan. 4, 2005. He was a
graduate of the University of
Michigan and worked at various
times as a manufacturer, builder,
salesman and property appraiser. He
served with distinction during World
War II, receiving the bronze star as
well as a medal from the king of
Italy for helping save a village from
starvation.
Mr. Sherman is survived by his
wife of 57 years, Liz; daughters and
son-in law, Ann Sherman of
Oklahoma City, Olda., Joan and
Robert Franke of Peabody, Mass,;
son and daughter-in-law, John and
Susan of Laguna Beach; grandchil-
dren, Matt and Mia Montazzoli of
Washington, D.C., Will and Lea
Sherman of Laguna Beach. He was
the brother of the late Mary Cohen
and the late Ruth Dobrowitsky.

JAMES H. SIEGEL, 79, of Beverly

Hills, died Jan. 21, 2005. An
Administrator of the Detroit Public
Schools, he was the director of
camping program, the assistant prin-
cipal of Angell Elementary School
and the Angell Primary School. He
had also worked
at Newton,
Bagley, Vernor
and Custer pub-
lic schools. He
retired in 1983.
Mr. Siegel was a
World War II
army veteran, a
volunteer for
Meals on Wheels
Siegel
for 20 years and
he taught at Temple Emanu-El for
20 years. A gardener, he was known
as "Grandpa Apple" and had over 70
fruit trees, bushes and vegetables.
Mr. Siegel is survived by his wife,
Marion Siegel of Beverly Hills; son
and fiancee, Dr. Michael Siegel and
Andrea Blackman of Wilmette, Ill.;
daughter-in-law, Martha Siegel;
grandchildren, Laura, Ben, Dan and
Emma Siegel; sister and brothers-in-
law, Josephine and George Segal,
Irving Panush.
Interment at Oakview Cemetery.
