Love Of Labor Lawyer to mark 100th birthday Sunday. LEONARD PO GER Copy Editor B ernard Davis of Southfield remembers two axioms from his childhood: work for the little guy and there is stren gtl in numbers. The third youngest of 10 children, he was the first to graduate high school. While Davis initially planned to become a doctor, he changed directions after dissecting worms and frogs in a New York University biology class. That experience led him to drop out of school. He worked for several years and then earned his bachelor's degree in law from St. John's Law School. He graduated in 1929, just months before the start of the Great Depression. Davis, who will mark his 100th birth- day on Sunday, Jan. 30, spent his profes- sional career representing labor unions in the New York City area because he always wanted to help the "little guy. Other than maintaining a healthy diet, Davis exercises nearly every day and in good weather walks regularly. Although he has to use a walker, he was able to drive an automobile until three years ago. Davis, who moved to Michigan 25 years ago to be closer to family mem- bers, attends services at Birmingham Temple in Farmington Hills, where his daughter, Judith Freund, is executive director. Davis was in the Teamsters' legal department and also represented several unions in his private practice. Born in New York City, he married Irene Sachter on June 30, 1929, the day he graduated law school. Later, he helped organize a synagogue congregation in Flushing, N.Y., and was elected its president. Davis bemoans the decline of labor unions. "Labor has become slaves to money and wealth. I dislike that we are selling our- selves out.
