JOE and SHELBY
SILVER

City: Huntington Woods
Kudos: Tsunami Aid

Eleven-year-old Joe Silver not only figured
how to make a significant contribution to
victims of the tsunami, but also a way to
include other kids in the donation process.
With the help of his sister Shelby 8, Joe has
been selling specially printed pencils for $1
a piece, with all profits being donated to
the American Jewish Joint Distribution
Committee's tsunami relief fund. Joe,
Shelby and sister Annie, 5, are the children
of Kenneth and Elizabeth Silver.

Joe, how did you get the idea of selling
pencils?
"I was watching about the tsunami
and wanted to do something to help the
children. I thought about selling some-
thing to make money for them —
maybe stickers — and then my aunt
suggested pencils. Shelby said she want-
ed to help."

What's printed on the pencils?
"I ordered 1,000 white pencils with
colored writing. I decided to say: "Kids
For Kids: Mission Tsunami" in bold
print. And they have a miniature
American flag on them to make them
patriotic."

Where have you been selling the
pencils?
"I am taking them every place I go.
The first day, I started by taking them to

school with me [Norup Middle School
in Oak Park]. Shelby took them to her
school, too [Burton Elementary in
Huntington Woods.] Then, we decided
to take them to Starbucks and also to set
up a booth near the vending machines
at Norup to sell them after school."

Elizabeth, how have your children's
pencils caught on?
"We bought one for each of the chil-
dren in Annie's class and Shelby's teacher
bought 22 for her classmates. When we
went to the allergist, the doctor only
took one pencil — but he gave the kids
$100. Then people in the waiting room
started to buy them, too."

Joe, what happened after your mom
called Rabbi Joseph Krakoff at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, where
you go to religious school?
"She told him about the pencils, and
he took me to each class at Hebrew
school so I could sell them. I came
home with $183!"

Shelby, how do you feel about this
project?
"I feel very happy that I'm doing this
for the children injured during the
tsunami."

Joe, what happens after you sell the
1,000 pencils you ordered?
"I'll buy 1,000 more. And I'll keep
ordering them and selling pencils as long
as people will buy them." ❑
