Special to the Jewish News

T

wo area Jews are spearheading
the recently announced com-
mitment by the Detroit-
Windsor Tunnel to increase capacity at
the international border crossing by 25
percent by December.
Daniel Cherrin of Berkley is the advo-
cate and lobbyist for the Detroit and
Canada Tunnel Corporation, operators
of the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. Neal
Belitsky of Saline is the tunnel's vice
president and general manager.
On Dec. 17, both met in Detroit
with Canadian Deputy Prime Minister
Anne McLellan and U.S. Secretary of
Homeland Security Tom Ridge. The
agenda was to challenge the local border
operators to improve traffic flow at
North America's busiest border cross-
ings.
More than one-third of all trade
between the United States and Canada
passes through the Detroit-Windsor
connection, the tunnel being the busiest
passenger crossing with a significant
commercial component.
"We're confident we can do it," says
Cherrin of the 12-month deadline.
"Some of the methods we'll use include
constructing and staffing a second com-
mercial lane and secondary commercial
inspection area."

Both Cherrin and Belitsky played key
roles in the days after 9-11 brought
increased government scrutiny to the
vital role of the tunnel as well as its
potential as a target for terrorism.
And the next time that Cherrin and
Belitsky sit down with the U.S. secretary
of homeland security, they will find
another Jew at the table. President Bush
has nominated federal Judge Michael
Chertoff to succeed Ridge in the cabinet
post.
Cherrin, 32, graduated from West
Bloomfield High School in 1991. He
earned a political science degree from
the University of Michigan and his law
degree from Michigan State University-
Detroit College of Law. He specializes in
U.S.-Canadian relations, legislative
advocacy, federal campaign finance and
election law, regulation of lobbying,
grassroots advocacy and public policy
communication strategies.
After practicing law at a small firm in
Southfield for a year, Cherrin was the
lobbyist for the Detroit Regional
Chamber of Commerce from 1999 to
2003. He helped bring the group to an
international level by establishing an
office in Washington, D.C.
Cherrin is currently vice president of
public policy and government procure-
ment and managing director of strategic
