"Purple is my favorite color," Ari
said, gesturing towards the violet in
his container.
"We try to do lots of family stuff
together," Michelle said. "In the
summer we go outside and do our
gardening."
"We want to take care of our
plants," said Sydney.
Marian Gaber of Oak Park said, "I
never had the opportunity to get
[gardening] instruction, so this is a
good chance."
Studies have shown that children
who engage in outdoor activities
with their families show improved
health, learning and appreciation of
the natural environment.
"We are currently creating a wild-
life habitat garden where families can
participate in the planting and cre-
ation of the garden," said Sara
Bernstein of Farmington Hills, pro-
gram coordinator for the event. "It is
healthy for the butterflies and birds
and also for us as humans." El
