a great photographer as it provides a
short version of Israeli history" Arad
says. "I wanted every picture to .stand on
its own, while together they show a
more optimistic, innocent Israel."
Arad intentionally picked photos to
reflect the waves of immigration as well
as formative events.
Two programs will draw attention to
the history associated with the images.
There will be an opening reception
6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, and there
will be a lecture by gallery director Sylvia
Nelson 7:15 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22.
"I keep some copies of these pictures
in my library at home and others in my
office," says Partrich, a member of
Congregation Shagrey Zedek. He is in
touch with other galleries about addi-
tional exhibitions. "I have copies of the
Ben-Gurion image as long as I can hold
on to them, but people take them from
me," he said.
This massive project takes Partrich
into a new artistic initiative. The closest
he ever came to saving artwork was sal-
vaging an individual painting kept in the
back of a gallery. He took it to a conser-
vationist to be cleaned and prepared for
display.
"When I first saw the Goldman nega-
tives, they were damp, almost moldy,"
recalls Partrich, who arranged for an oral
Southfield
history about Paul Goldman as told by
his widow and daughter. "I took a
chance by buying them, and I'm so glad
that I did." ❑
"The Forgotten Photographs:

Bloomfield. Gallery hours are 10
