I would be remiss if I didn't write to
you about Leadership Oakland's
Breakfast of Nations program that you
mention in your Editor's Notebook
("Bridging The Great Divide," Jan.
13, page 5). I believe that you did not
realize the large part the Anti-
Defamation League played in this pro-
gram.
Besides being a sponsor for the sec-
ond year in a row, ADL trainers facili-
tated workshops using material from
our award winning, anti-bias educa-
tion and diversity awareness training
program: A World of Difference
Institute.
AWOD has trained thousands of
teachers, students and parents nation-
ally. In Michigan, we have been called
upon by many school districts, includ-
ing West Bloomfield, Berkley and
Ferndale. We have been selected by
schools that were mandated to have
diversity training by the government
because of hate-based incidents in
those schools.
The ADL recently received a grant
from the Jewish Fund to hold AWOD
programs in the Detroit Public
Schools. This is just a part of what the
Anti-Defamation League does. I invite
the readers of the Jewish News to go to
our Web site: vvww.adl.org to learn
more about the mission programs,
activities and goals of the ADL.

Your Editor's Notebook "Bridging The
Great Divide" (Jan. 13, page 5) was
good as far as it went, but you over-
looked a community source that
helped accomplish such a purpose as
you suggest with great success many
years ago.
I am referring to the Allied Veterans
Council of Wayne County, a collabo-
ration of many veterans' groups such
as the American Legion, Disabled
American Veterans, AMVETS
(American Veterans), Jewish War
Veterans, Catholic War Veterans and
others. This organization was more
than just a melting pot. Jewish veter-
ans became comrades with other
groups to realistically combat racial
discrimination such as anti-Semitism,
for example.
Blacks, whites and Asian Americans,
men and women, all veterans, banded

together to prove conclusively that dif-
ferences in all areas — social, econom-
ic, cultural, religious — were immate-
rial in our republic. Service in our
armed forces in wartime welded us
into a brotherhood of liberation.
There is a lesson to be learned here
and to be remembered. Life, liberty
and the pursuit of happiness is a goal
well worth our dedication and self-sac-
rifice. Adversity can strengthen and
make us stronger as a nation.
Intelligent and equitable use of all
our resources will assure an America
still resolute in its determination to
continue our tradition as the best
country in the world.
We did it in World War II, and we
can do it again.

Residents Help Relief Drive

It is with great pleasure that I tell you
about the generosity of the residents of
Prentis Apartments in Oak Park.
When the terrible news came from
Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia, the
residents held a meeting ;end immedi-
ately decided to contribute toward the
tsunami relief. In just four days, we
collected a nice sum of money.
The seniors opened their hearts and
pockets. It was unbelievable; God bless
all who participated. We are sending
the money to the proper place for dis-
tribution. It is a great cause.
