"Watching our children reach out
to other children across the globe, by
learning Torah, filled me with a deep
sense of pride," said Robyn Glickman,
elementary school principal.
To date, Hillel students have raised
more than $3,100 for the American
Jewish Joint Distribution Committee
Tsunami Relief Fund. The school will
combine its efforts with the other day
schools throughout the country for a
nationwide total. Hillel's Learn-a-
Thon truly exemplified the famous
quote from the Talmud: "Great is the
learning that leads to action."

Farmington Hills participate in the Learn-a-Than.

Thon. By seeking sponsors, students
could transform their learning time
into tzedakah (righteous acts). Hillel
took the lead in spreading this idea.
After a few phone calls, other
Solomon Schechter schools eagerly
came on board.
What began as a school-wide chesed
(act of kindness) program quickly
turned into a nationwide event.
Students throughout the United States
studied texts about tzedakah. They
learned that Jews give of their time
and money not only out of a charita-
ble impulse, but because it is a mitz-
vah to do the right thing.
