`Sex And The Synagogue'

Jewish high school students are
invited to B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization's Jewish Heritage Night
6:45-8:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, at
Adat Shalom Synagogue.
The program theme, "Sex and the
Synagogue," will focus on the Jewish
view of sex and sexuality, led by
Rabbi Aaron Bergman of the Jewish
Academy of Metropolitan Detroit
and Rabbi Michelle Faudem, for-
merly affiliated with Hillel Day
School.
The rabbis will lead separate dis-
cussions and question-and-answer
sessions for boys and girls, along
with an introduction and closing
discussion including everyone.
There is no charge; all Jewish high
school students are welcome.
BBYO Jewish Heritage Nights are
held three times a year. For informa-

Academy Earns Grant

The Jewish Academy of
Metropolitan Detroit is entering its
second year as a recipient of an AVI
CHAI Bookshelf grant.
The New York-based private foun-
dation is dedicated to supporting
and encouraging the growing day
school movement and developed Avi
Chai Bookshelf — a three-year $1.9
million program — in an effort to
enhance libraries at Jewish high
schools in the United States and
Canada. Funds provided allow par-
ticipating schools to purchase print
and nonprint materials for their
library collections.
JANID will receive up to $15,000
over a three-year period toward the
purchase of materials.

Maccabi Financial Aid Set

Special Soccer Program

The Metropolitan Detroit Maccabi
Club invites all past and present
Detroit Maccabi athletes to apply for
the Robinson Memorial Scholarship
Award.
The scholarship was established in
memory of Jay Robinson, founder
and past president of the Maccabi
Club, whose lifelong goal was to fos-
ter Jewish identity and participation
in Jewish communal life.
The scholarship winner will
receive $1,000 toward study in Israel
or for participation in an organized
national or international Jewish
event (this does not include the
JCCA Maccabi Games).
Participation must occur before
May 31, 2006.
Candidates are required to submit
a one- or two-page essay describing a
personal Maccabi experience and
how it has affected his/her life; a
personal profile, including name,
address, telephone number, school
now attending, and year completed
by June 2005; two letters of recom-
mendation from non-relatives; and
specifics of the program for which
the award will be used (dates, cost,
curriculum, sponsoring organiza-
tion).
Information must be submitted by
May 15 to the Metropolitan Detroit
Maccabi Club Robinson
Scholarship, c/o Barbara Robinson,

TOPSoccer, sponsored by the Lakes
Area Youth Soccer League, is a soc-
cer program for any child under the
age of 19 who has a mental or physi-
cal disability. The program is geared
toward development, not competi-
tion.
Players will be placed on a team by
ability, not by age. The program
helps to improve overall fitness and
self-esteem, as well as giving a sense
of belonging to a team.

The program is also seeking coach-
es and player pals, between the ages
of 10 and 19, who are willing to
team up with TOPSocer players to

MSU Hosts Diplomat

The Michigan State University Hillel
and the Greater Lansing Jewish
Welfare Federation will host scholar
and diplomat Dennis Ross, former
U.S. ambassador to Israel, 8 p.m.
Monday, Jan. 24, at the Kellogg
Center Auditorium. Admission is
free.
Ross' book, The Missing Peace—
The Inside Story of the Fight for the
Middle East, will provide the basis
for his talk.
