A History Treasure

Many thanks to special writer Ronelle
Grier for her fine account of the
adventures of local children who take
the "youth tour" of historic Jewish
Detroit ("Discover Detroit" Jan. 13,
page 44).
For the past three years, the Jewish
Historical Society of Michigan, with
Federation funding through the Max
M. Fisher Foundation, has worked
hard to make this field trip meaning-
ful and memorable for many hun-
dreds of young Jewish participants.
Along the way, we've discovered
that adults, who rarely know much of
the information presented, become
just as "hooked on history" as the kids
do when the information is presented
in all its color and richness. Youthful-
minded grownups from Hillel of
Metro Detroit and University of
Michigan have loved this tour.
Our tour guide group is now
expanded to include Barbara Cook,
Ruthe Goldstein and Margie Jablin,
each of whom graduated from listener
to speaker after taking the tour several
times.
This issue of the Jewish News nicely
highlights some local events, includ-
ing Shalom Street's Stamp Show and
the Alliance's poster-essay contest. The
cover photos and other stories are
great, but the best surprise was way
inside this issue — the centerfold
keepsake poster is a real treasure. Judy
Cantor's illustrated timeline is a great
teaching aid for those of us who teach
in Jewish schools.
Our local Jewish history will stay
alive only if we find ways to make it
compelling for our children. We at
JHSOM hope to be able to continue
doing that through our youth tours;
keep up your end, JN, with great sto-
ries and artwork.

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

"The Jewish Academy helped me become a confi-
dent and proud Jew. People say that attending a
Jewish day school doesn't allow you to experience
the real world, but the real world is not high school
football games and homecoming dances. It is walk-
ing across the Diag and being confronted by anti-
Israel protestors or by Jews for Jesus who tell you that
you are praying to the wrong God. JAMD empowered
me to feel secure enough in who I am as a Jew not to
feel threatened." David Kurzmann, JAMD '04

"The Jewish Academy taught me the importance of
having a strong personal relationship with each
teacher. Going to college, I knew that good rela-
tionships with my instructors could enrich my
learning experience. I make a point to go to all of
my professors' office hours to establish a personal
relationship so that when I walk into a lecture hall,
I am not just another student but rather seen as
Amira." Amira Gaba, JAMD '04
