everyone arrives. Then the fun starts.
For icing, Shapiro uses 2 lbs. con-
fectioners sugar, slowly whisking in
water until the frosting is a soft,
smooth consistency, "easy to paint
with using a brush," Shapiro says.
"Too watery isn't good, so in
case you put in too much
water, add more confection-
ers sugar."
Once the basic frosting is
made, just place into
small jars or bowls
(Shapiro recommends
plastic cream cheese
containers) and add
food coloring. Now all
you need is a few paint-
brushes (clean, of
course), and you're ready
to go-go, too.
While the family began by making
Chanukah cookie designs to paint,
over the years, many shapes have been
added to our standard Chanukah
cookie icons," Shapiro says.
These include peacocks, hands and
ball gowns, "which take too much
dough so they only do one each."
Still, the Jewish-shaped cookies, like
the Star of David, remain the favorites.
"My most important instruction:
Use drop cloths on the floor," Shapiro
says.
In addition to food coloring, it's fun
to use colored sugar, mini candies and
sprinkles, which look terrific on cook-
ies — but not on the carpeting.
I is no wonder everybody wants to
go-go to Grandma Go-Go's house
each year for her annual Cookie
Factory.
Once a year, the family
joins at Grandma's
house to decorate
cookies. "It just
gets better and
better each year
with the age and
number of grand-
children; of course,
the adults like it even
better," says Grandma
Go-Go herself, also
known as Golda Shapiro
of West Bloomfield.
Shown here are Geoff Berdy of Ann
Arbor; his wife Dina; and Grandma
Go-Go in the very act of decorating
cookies (Geoff provides musical accom-
paniment). Also attending, but not pic-
tured, were Beth, Andy and Max Isola
of Macomb Township; Ron, Debbie,
Jennifer, Jackie and Rebecca Shapiro of
West Bloomfield; Adam Shapiro of
Huntington Woods; and Golda's hus-
band, Ed, whom his wife describes as
"chief set-up and clean-up person."
"This became a tradition when our
first grandchild, Jennifer, was 6 years
old," Shapiro says of the Cookie
Factory. "She was staying over for a
weekend, and we looked for something
fun to entertain her with.
"Of course, with only
one grandchild, one
recipe of cookie dough
was sufficient, and we
could mix batter, roll, cut
and bake, and decorate all
in one day."
These days, the family
includes five grandchildren
"and lots of adults who love
to decorate," Shapiro says.
