A Divine Gift

New Torah scroll presented to Fleischman chapel.

T

hrough a contribution in honor
of Israel Landa, a new Sefer
Torah was presented to the
Chaim Kaufman Chapel of the
Fleischman Residence in West
Bloomfield.
The story behind this gift represents
the essence of meaningful giving.
Landa, a Holocaust survivor, lives at
Hechtman Apartments, next to
Fleischman, and davens twice a day in
the Chaim Kaufman
Chapel. When asked
by his family what
would give him the
most pleasure and
would add meaning to
his life, he responded
that he wanted to
thank God for sparing
his life during the
Holocaust when so
many others perished.
The best way he
could pay respect to
God and thank him at
the same time was for
the family to give the
gift of a Torah in his
honor to the Chaim
Kaufman Chapel that
he so loves.
A meanin
traditional ceremony

was held in the Chaim Kaufman
Chapel where the sofer (ritual scribe)
Rabbi Yosef Lange completed the
Torah. Residents, families, staff and
community joined in the freilach cele-
bration.
The community is always welcome
to join Landa at Minchah and Maariv
services and join his friends, the
Minyonaires, as they daven in the
Chaim Kaufman Chapel. ❑
