Congregation B'nai Moshe Sisterhood
will present "Sweet Singer of Israel —
A Tribute to Naomi Shemer," celebrat-
ing the life and work of the beloved
poet and songwriter of modern Israel,
who passed away last summer at age
74. The program will be 12:30-1:30
p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22,
It will be a "Stay and Learn on
Shabbat" event and will feature a
Hebrew poetry reading by Ahuva
Newman and a musical presentation
by Susan Greener of Naomi Shemer's
most loved songs. There is no charge,
and no reservations are required.
The program follows a Sisterhood
Shabbat that will feature many sister-
hood participants. Lynne Avadenka
will serve as gabbai rishon and will
chant "Shirat Hayam," the "Song of
the Sea," the fourth aliyah. Other
Torah readers will include Rabbi Elliot
Pachter, Nancy Kaplan, Barbara
Maxwell, Naomi Pinchuk, Zoe Pinter,
Tracey Stulberg, Marc J. Sussman and
Ilana Wolfson.
Naomi Pinchuk will chant the
Haftorah. Pearlena Bodzin will deliver
the D'var Torah and Sue Himelhoch
will introduce the haftorah. B'nai
Moshe Sisterhood President Annette
Kaufman will deliver the sermon.
Bimah honors will be given to sister-
hood past presidents Gail Ellenbogen,
Susan Friedman, Ruth Shayne and
Sharlene Ungar, among others.
Recent b'not mitzvah Dani
Dulberg, Sammi Fine and Esther
Taxon will lead the congregation in
Anim Zemirot, Ashrei, and Kiddush.

New Testament Class

Rabbi Joseph Klein of Temple Emanu-
El will teaching a six-week course: "A
Jewish Understanding of the New
Testament and First Century History"
in February and March.
This course will discuss, from a
Jewish perspective, the New Testament
Gospel writings and the letters of Paul.
It will explore First Century history,
early Church and rabbinic Judaism.
The class will meet 7:30-9 p.m.
Thursdays, Feb. 3, 10, 24; and March
10, 17, 31. Registration fees are $85
per person or $100 for two who share
texts. The fees include the book A
Jewish Understanding of the New
Testament by Samuel Sandmel and a
20-page study guide-source text from
Rabbi Klein.
