Peter Max to Max M. Fisher — the list
of famous American Jews is long and
illustriou.s.
To encourage students to explore
American Jewish history and personali-
ties, the Alliance for Jewish Education of
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit is sponsoring "350 Years of
Extraordinary Jews in America," an essay
and poster contest for 6th-12th graders.
Entries must relate to the topic "How
Did One American Jew Contribute to
Our Country and What's the Message
for Me?" Prizes will be awarded in both'
the essay and poster categories, in each
of two divisions : grades 6-8 and grades
9-12.
Essays, of not more than 1,000 words,
must be solely the work of the entrant
and will be judged on the basis of clarity,
writing skill and originality. Posters can
be either two or three-dimensional and
will be judged on the basis of originality,
overall impact, visual appeal, clarity of
message, creativity and neatness.
Reference materials will be available in
Shalom Street and the adjacent David B.
Hermelin ORT Resource Center at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield to encourage and assist stu-
dents enterina b the contests.
The grand prize in each category is a
Jewish heritage trip to New York City,
including a round-trip flight for each
student accompanied by an adult, hotel
accommodations for two nights, dinners
and sightseeing. Second prize, is a $500
Israel Bond; third prize is a $ 1 00 Israel
Bond. The deadline for all entries is Feb.

Top winning entries will be printed in
the Jewish News.

"Return to Recife" from Feb. 20 to
March 4 with Rabbi David and Alicia
Nelson of Congregation Beth Shalom,
Oak Park Explore the beauty, history
and Jewish culture of Brazil with visits to
Rio de Janeiro, Ouro Preto (the historic
"first capital), Salvador Bahia and Recife.
Experience Jewish sites, Jewish commu-
nities and Brazilian food.
Recife is where the remains of a his-
toric synagogue have been unearthed. It
is the city that launched the 23 Jews
who first arrived in New Amsterdam
(New York) 350 years ago after fleeing
the Portuguese who had recaptured
Brazil from the Dutch.

Rabbi Nelson's first pulpit was in Rio
de Janeiro: He served his congregation,
the A.R.I., for two years from 1967-69.
