"They really are daredevils," Dr.
Domstein said. "Both of them."
David is now back home to the joy
and relief of his parents.
"When he got back here last Tuesday
night [Jan. 4], I just felt him to make
sure he was whole," Dr. Domstein said.
"I touched his chest and his arm and
hugged him. I wasn't really OK until I
saw him."
While he said, "My sons are both
very fortunate, and I thank God they
are both safe," he added, "I really feel
for the families that don't have any clo-
sure.
Dr. Domstein, who is secular princi-

pal for English studies at Yeshivat Akiva
in Southfield is encouraging his stu-
dents to help the tsunami victims by
placing donations in a jar in the school.
As is the case with other Detroit area
Jewish schools, the contributions will be
given to Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, who will send
them to the American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee relief fund.
In spite of — or perhaps because of
— the harrowing experience the men
lived through, David said, "I have a real
warm spot in my heart for the Thai
people and for their country. I can't
wait to go back." ❑

Making Donations

President George W Bush has signed a
bill that allows those who make cash
contributions for tsunami victims by
Jan. 31, 2005, to claim a tax deduction
for 2004.
The Jewish Federation of Metropoli-
tan Detroit and the Jewish Fund have
joined to launch an aid drive in collabo-
ration with the national effort of the
American Jewish Joint Distribution
Committee (JDC) — a partner agency
in delivering aid overseas. To date, the
total tsunami relief effort of Detroit's
Jewish community through Federation
and the Jewish Fund stands at approxi-
mately $200,000.
Gifts directed to Federation and ear-
marked for the Tsunami Relief Fund
will be funneled through JDC. To date,
JDC has raised more than $2 million
across the nation. To donate online, see:
