shape of most older televisions, it
also cuts off a few inches. Watching
films in wide-screen ratio enables
vou to see every inch of the movie
or the game.
Almost all of the new high-defi-
nition broadcasts are also being
shot in \vide-screen format. This
includes sporting events like the
National Football League's Super
Bowl, the NBA Finals, the Summer
Olympic Games and NCAA foot-
ball bowl games. You will be
amazed at how much more of the
playing field you can view on a
wide-screen plasma TV.
High-definition digital broad-
casting is relatively new. Offered
through cable and satellite service
providers, it can often cost a bit
more than regular service and
requires the rental or purchase of a
high-definition tuner. What do you
get for the money? High definition
provides the best possible digital
picture and sound available. It is
also the standard that the Federal
Communications Commission will
be requiring for all broad-
casting by the end of
2006 (this date tentative-
ly makes room for market
demands and consumer
considerations).
There is a growing list
of channels now provid-
ing high-definition digital
video and audio. ESPN,
HBO, Showtime and
Cinemax offer high-defi-
nition programming every day.
ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX offer
many primetime shows in high def-
inition. PBS and INHD offer some
incredible documentaries: the
ocean deep, skydiving, photogra-
phy, and historical documentaries.
They make for incredible viewing.
A plasma television can have the
feel of a living picture frame in a
room rather than just a portal to the
local news and reality shows.
Thinking of the combined possibil-
ities of high-def broadcasting and
satellite radio reminds one of the
exciting possibilities brought about
in the early, experimental days of
television and radio. Perhaps these
new technologies and wider palates
will help launch a renaissance in
radio and television programs.
The best way to see the possibil-
ities of these new screens is to view
them on display at your local home
media store. Be sure to go to a
manufacturer-authorized dealer to
get the best information, demon-
strations and service.
