Seminary of America's Midwest rep-
resentative.
"Fortunately, a more balanced per-
spective is evident among many
Presbyterian leaders around the coun-
try who have issued calls for mutual
steps of reconciliation between Israelis
and Palestinians."
But with the church's connections
abroad, as with the Evangelical Synod in
Syria and Lebanon, which hosted the
Presbyterian group that met with repre-
sentatives of Hezbollah, the balancing
act is difficult. These clergy in Syria and
Lebanon also condemned the
Presbyterian Church (USA) General
Assembly for "buckling to appease the
U.S. Jewish community" after the
assembly condemned the visit with
Hezbollah, according to the Presbyterian
News Service (Dec. 7, 2004).
Can one be passionate for the
Palestinians and also support Israel?
"I don't know in today's political
climate," Rabbi Nelson said. "I'm not
sure. But I've been to meetings where
there's a balance and an interest in
hearing our perspective."
At the Detroit meeting, he said,
church leaders called Israel's security
barrier an apartheid wall. "We know
it's caused inconvenience, but it saves
lives. It's a fence for defense. They
wanted us to understand all their
anguish, but they didn't haVe corre-
sponding pain for the Israelis. It
wasn't a balanced viewpoint."

Next Step

At a meeting with Orchard Lake's Dr.
Robertson, Presbyterian and Jewish
representatives said they found the
session productive.
"We were impressed with the sensi-

tive concern of those who visited our
church," Dr. Robertson said of
Shapiro, Brenda Rosenberg of West
Bloomfield and Rabbi Conrad in
mid-December. "We came away with
a new appreciation of the importance
of clear and open communication."
He said he echoed his Jewish visi-
tors in condemning the unauthorized
and inappropriate visit with
Hezbollah. He disagreed with the
vote favorable to divestment, which,
he said, "barely passed because of its
failure to lay fair responsibility for
acts of violence."
Dr. Robertson believed that the
church's absolute commitment to
Israel's right to exist without threats
within negotiated borders is not
mutually exclusive with its other
belief in the right of self-determina-
tion for the Palestinians.
The next step, he said, is further
conversation — and to include the
Islamic community in it.
Rabbi Nevins, in an attempt to fur-
ther relationships, is planning a trip
this May with,),6 members of the
Jewish and Christian clergy, including
Farmington Hills' Dr. Melrose. The
mission will visit Rome and Israel.
"Traveling and learning together
makes you clear about your perspec-
tive and also opens you to others,"
Dr. Melrose said. "Both are impor-
tant to have a dialogue.
"When we look at what happened
over the last few months between the
Jewish and Presbyterian communi-
ties," she added, "it's a crisis, yes. But
in the long term, I can't help but feel
that these discussions are a very good
thing that will strengthen the ties
between us." ❑
