Mrs. Abt, the last Holocaust sur-
vivor of her family, was woman of
deep faith, devoted to Judaism and
education about the Holocaust. She
died knowing that she was admired
and cherished as the gift she was to all
who knew her, said her daughter.
"Her indomitable spirit, her sweet
voice, her joyous laughter and sense
of humor, her incredible zest for life
and her love will be with her family
and friends forever."
Mrs. Abt was born in Hamburg,
Germany, on April 18, 1911. Her
parents, Aaron and Rosa Seidner, and
brothers Hermann and Bernhard
Seidner perished in the Holocaust.
Another brother, Friedrich Seidner,
survived.
She escaped the Nazis in late 1939
and immigrated to the United States.
Her Holocaust experi-
ences defined her life,
but they did not limit
her life, said her daugh-
ter. After her marriage in
UST
OR 1942 to Herbert Abt, she
continued to live in New
York and worked as a
seamstress-dressmaker. After her hus-
band died in 1967, she worked in an
exclusive dress
shop on Fifth
Avenue until she
retired in 1981.
She moved to
Southfield in
1986 to be near
her daughter
son-in-law, and
Goldie Seidner Abt grandson Neal.
She was a cher-
ished member of Congregation
T'chiyah in Oak Park and several
members of the congregation partici-
pated in her funeral. Rabbi E.B.
"Bunny" Freedman of the Jewish
Hospice and Chaplaincy Network
officiated.
Mrs. Abt is survived by her daugh-
ter, Roslyn Abt Schindler of
Huntington Woods; grandchildren,
Neal Schindler of Seattle; Daniel (and
Karon) Schindler of Atlanta; Lore
Schindler of Pasadena; Inge (and
John) Slater of Niceville, Fla.; great-
grandson, Jonathan Slater; sister-in-
law, Susan Seidner of San Francisco.
She was the beloved sister of the
late Friedrich Seidner and the dear
mother-in-law of the late Marvin
Schindler.
Interment was at Clover Hill Park
Cemetery. Contributions may be
made to Congregation T'chiyah, c/o
Jane Miller, 30688 Hickory Lane,
Franklin, MI 48025. Arrangements
by Ira Kaufman Chapel.
