(248) 619-0264 Misplanted Seeds Thanks, BBYO Once again, Seeds of Peace has pro- duced a successful fund-raising social event in the Detroit area ("Waging Peace," Dec. 24, page 11). Of note was that one of the corporate leader- ship chairs was Debbie Dingell, vice chair of the General Motors Foundation and wife of U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-Dearborn. Those receiving the Seeds co-com- munity leadership awards, along with our own Florine Mark, included Tim and Fatimah Attalla. I was struck by a particularly revealing remark by Tim Attalla in the Detroit News on Nov. 12. Various local people were asked about the possibility of peace follow- ing the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. According to the Detroit News: "The obstacle to peace has never been Yasser Arafat," said Tim Attalah, a lawyer in Dearborn who is of Palestinian descent. "The obstacle to peace is the occu- pation of territory by Israel. It's that simple. "Anyone who said that Arafat was an obstacle to peace dodged the real issue of the conflict," said Attalla, a Muslim who is active in Seeds of Peace, an organization that unites Israeli and Palestinian youths to foster good will." Unites to foster good will? How is that? By embracing the philosophy of Tim Attalla, Saeb Erekat (longtime political spokesman for Arafat and also a director of Seeds of Peace) or other Seeds directors — or Congressmen John Dingell and John Conyers and former Congressman David Bonior, all respected Michigan members of the pro-Arab Hall of Fame created by the Arab lobby to honor those congressmen voting most regularly for "anti-Israel" legislation? Does anyone think any of the above would be part of an organization that had Israel's best interests in mind? Would very politically savvy Debbie Dingell be part of anything that harmed her husband's political image among his very large Arab constituen- cy? Jerome S. Kaufman Bloomfield Hills I just wanted to let BBYO know how wonderful it was to have the movie night on Christmas evening after Shabbat at the Livonia Mall ("BBYO Plans Fund-Raiser," Dec. 17, page 19). I hope BBYO made a lot of money to support the Michigan BBYO pro- gram. My family of four went to the movies at the 8:30 p.m. show. The kids saw Fat Albert. My husband and I saw Meet the Fockers, which had so much Jewish content, it was a perfect choice for this event. A lot of our Jewish friends were there. It was like having an Oak Park reunion. I would like to suggest that this event become a tradition.
