about a third-grader. Consequently, if
you have young friends or family who
would like to know something about
the Jewish world, this could serve as
an introduction.
Jewish readers, on the other hand,
may take issue with the copy in this
book, especially after seeing the title.
(Since it's called What You Will See
Inside A Synagogue, not What You Will
See Inside A Reform Synagogue, it
would have been nice had the book
given equal treatment to Conservative
and Orthodox congregations.)

Take the authors' rather curious
description of synagogues as "like
repair shops for the people in our
world who are broken." What? This is
on a page about the importance of
helping others, but even congregations
that open themselves to the homeless
aren't likely to describe what typically
goes on at their synagogue as "repair
shop" work on "broken people.
A photo of a boy in a library
includes the sentence, "We sometimes
pray not just in the sanctuary, but in
other rooms, too — especially the syn-
agogue library." Maybe, but the vast
majority of Jews who go to services do
not pray in the library.

to Esther's Judaica Book and Gift
World at the Sugar Tree Shopping
Center on Orchard Lake Road in
West Bloomfield. Here, each Saturday
night after Shabbat, families and sin-

gles, grandparents, children, aunts
and uncles gather for a fun night of
song.
The Hebrew folk song sessions are
headed by Rabbi Baruch Lazewnik, a
rabbinic instructor at the Jewish
Academy of Metropolitan Detroit,
who plays his electric guitar. The
event is free and open to the public.
