Paid Internships Earn $2,288 this summer LIFE AFTER LANSING and a world of knowledge. from page 16 Public Service Future? Shulman is quick to say he would return to public service "if the right opportunity comes up." He says that may be in 2006, when fellow Republican Shirley Johnson of Birmingham ends her third term as state senator in the 13th District; she's also term limited. The district covers Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Royal Oak, Berkley, Clawson and parts of Troy and Madison Heights. "I would have to move the family, probably to Birmingham," he said, "so that's not an obstacle." But Oakland County Republican Party Chairman Paul Welday feels differently. "Mark has had a very distinguished career in the State House, and it's too bad that term limits affect good legis- lators like him; but moving to the 13th Senate district might be a barri- er," said Welday. "He would be well qualified, but the voters of that dis- trict have no relationship with him." Welday feels that State Rep. Shelley Goodman Taub from the 40th District or State Rep. Bob Gosselin from the 41st District might be better suited to move up to the 13th State Senate District post. They already live in that area. Shulman has ruled out a try for the Ninth District congressional seat of U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg, 71, R- Bloomfield Hills, in 2006. "I would be interested in that posi- tion, but Joe is hale and hardy; and there's nothing to indicate he's going to retire," Shulman said. Chris Close, a spokesman in Knollenberg's Washington, D.C., office, said the congressman has absolutely no plans to leave. Shulman belongs to Congregation Shaarey Zedek. He has an education degree from Michigan State University and is a graduate of Thomas Cooley Law School. He taught middle school in Okemos and Sunday school at a Lansing syna- gogue, clerked for a judge, and served as a special assistant attorney general under Democrat Atty. Gen. Frank Kelly. The drawback of term limits, Welday pointed out, is that they "affect good guys like Marc, who hold important positions, such as his Appropriations Committee chairman- ship. Right now, he's a victim of the system, with no elective office to seek. And voters forget politicians very quickly in today's world."
