Jerusalem/JTA — Three Israeli high-
schoolers protested a visit by a military
officer. The three 12th-graders chained
themselves to the Tel Aviv school's
auditorium before a lecture by an air
force brigadier general, intended to bol-
ster morale among the future military
draftees. The protesters, who were
talked down by police, accused the
Education Ministry of "militarizing"'
schools by inviting officers to visit.

"Our community, and in particular,
our parents' generation has led by

Jerusalem/JTA — Israel reprimanded
military officers responsible for the
accidental killing of three Egyptian
border policemen.
The army said Tuesday that the
Israel Defense Force's chief of staff, Lt.
Gen. Moshe Ya'alon, had reprimanded
the Southern Command general and
several junior officers for the Nov. 18
incident in which an Israeli tank in
the Gaza Strip opened fire on a group
of Egyptian border policemen who it
mistook for Palestinian terrorists.
Ya'alon also apologized to the
Egyptian top brass and pledged to
review military practices in Gaza to
prevent a recurrence.
Israelis Fight AIDS
Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli scientists
claimed a breakthrough in AIDS treat-
ment. Hadassah University Medical
Center in Jerusalem said its researchers
had developed a vaccine that signifi-
cantly strengthens the body's immune
system against the autoimmune afteref-
fects of HIV infection.
The vaccine could dramatically
improve the prospects of AIDS patients
receiving treatment. The researchers
found that though treatment with a
common cocktail of AIDS medications
kills the virus, the immune system con-
tinues to kill healthy cells. While the
virus disappears in many patients, their
immune systems remain dangerously
ineffective against foreign elements, and
many of the patients end up dying
from related complications. The new
vaccine, which does not harm the
immune system, is in the clinical-trial
stage, Hadassah said.
Doctors And Miracles
New York/JTA — Nearly 75 percent of
U.S. doctors believe miracles can
occur, a new survey says.
The survey also found that 72 per-
cent of the 1,100 doctors polled
believe that religion provides a reliable
and necessary guide to life. Non-
Orthodox Jewish doctors are less likely
to believe that miracle stories in the
Bible are literally true, while more
than 53 percent of Orthodox Jewish
doctors and 60 percent of Protestant
doctors surveyed believe them.
The survey of doctors — including
Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist doctors
— was conducted by HCD Research
and the Louis Finkelstein Institute for
Religious and Social Studies of the
Jewish Theological Seminary of
America.
Palestinian Prisoners Freed
Jerusalem/JTA — Israel released 159
Palestinians from its jails. The prison-
ers, most of them jailed for links to
terrorist groups and the rest in deten-
tion for working in Israel without per-
mits, were freed in a gesture of grati-
tude toward Egyptian President Hosni
Mubarak, who this month granted
early release to an Israeli businessman
accused of spying.
The releases also were intended to
foster good will in the Palestinian
Authority ahead of its Jan. 9 presiden-
tial elections. Frontrunner Mahmoud
Abbas called for Israeli amnesty for
7,000, including hardened terrorists,
but Israel says it won't release those
convicted of killing Israeli citizens.

TEE ISSUE
While Israeli Prime Minister
Sharon is putting together a new,
stable majority governing coalition,
there continue to be major rifts in
his own Likud party. The rifts
reflect three major strategies for
dealing with the Palestinians.
BEEEDID TEE ISSUE
American Jewish Congress analyst
Ron Skolnick divides current Israeli
foreign policy thinking into three
streams. Those who back the Gaza.
withdrawal are "disengagers," led by
Prime Minister Sharon. The "attri-
tionists" want to accelerate the war
against terrorists until the
Palestinian population is fatigued.
The "negotiators" say Israel must
immediately re-engage the
Palestinians in direct negotiations.
