"It should be the height of self-satis-
faction, but in fact it underscores the
hollowness of material achievement. It
didn't mean anything to me. It's basic
evolutionary psychology. Grammys,
Ferraris — they're all peacock feathers,
aren't they?"
Though quick to acknowledge that
he's had a charmed life, and indeed, it is
nice not to have bill collectors after him,
Fagenson came to realize that the real
reward, of course, is "making a great
record, being there in the moment and
appreciating it. I came out of it OK."
He also spent time reading The Jew in
the Lotus, by Rodger Kamenetz. "I con-

old friends are reteaming for a reunion
tour, dubbed by the brothers Was as the
"Life After Meth" tour, during which
they'll help Detroit ring in the New Year
at the Royal Oak Music Theater.
They also have two new albums due
out in April 2005. One is a greatest hits
compilation; the other, a collection of
original tracks, tentatively titled Boo!
"We've both been dabbling for a long
time," says Fagenson. "We did have the
inclination to demonstrate our artistic
growth. But people don't want to hear
your esoterica. I don't want to hear my
esoterica. So now I just want to pick up
where we left off"

sider myself to be extremely Jewish, but
it's a personal Judaism. The book was
such an eye opener for me," he says.
"But I really don't want to go into all
this. I'll be in hot water with my mom."
Growing up Jewish in Oak Park in the
1960s, says Weiss, "was kind of like a
kosher Leave it to Beaver world. It was
really idyllic." At the same time, though,
as catcher on the high-school baseball
team, he weathered more than a few
comments from the stands at away
games.
"I was like a walking billboard for
Jewishness and was in a couple of scraps.
That's when I began to develop my
Jewish bones. I began to realize that in a
crisis, people come together, and that
Jews exhibit that quality in an exemplary
way," he says. "I think as a result of that,
when I sit down to write music, I try to
stir things up."
With an almost celebratory tone, the

Of reuniting with Weiss, Fagenson
says, "We had a good 35-year run with-
out a single harsh word. You have a
rough period, but it gets back on track,"
he says. "You just don't replace friends
like that. It's the next closest thing to
having the same DNA, sharing a forma-
tive experience like that."
