Zohar Series Starts

Rabbi Daniel Nevins of Adat
Shalom Synagogue will present a
lunch and learn series on Rabbi
Moses de Leon and the Zohar at the
synagogue on Thursdays, Jan. 13, 20
and 27.
From Moses to Madonna, Jewish
mystical insights have fascinated reli-
gious seekers from all backgrounds.
The current craze to learn the secrets
of Kabbalah has little to do with tra-
ditional texts and concepts of
Judaism's ancient mystical tradition,
Rabbi Nevins said.
In this series, the group will learn
about the circle of Spanish
Kabbalists, who developed a new
mystical literature in the 13th centu-
ry. The most significant product of
that era was the Zohar, a book "dis-
covered" by Rabbi Moses de Leon,
but ascribed to the famous Rabbi
Shimon bar Yochai, who lived 1,000
years earlier in Israel. Participants
will use the new Zohar translation
and commentary of Daniel Matt.
Classes run from noon-1:30 p.m.
The $10 fee per session includes
lunch. Reservations required one
week ahead. Call Sheila Lederman at
(248) 851-5100, ext. 246.
