A 1918 Dutch poster urgrd the Dutch government to support Jewish rights in
other countries.

history, and when his family asked
him to leave [for his own safety], he
said, 'No, I'm a Dutchman.'"
Though his parents survived the war,
they died young, "second-degree vic-
tims destabilized by the war," he said.
In the 1960s, Bregstein read books
about the destruction of the Dutch
Jews and became obsessed by his
Jewish past, he recalled. This path led
him to make movies and write books
about the subject.
He learned how the Marrano Jews
escaped the intolerance in Spain for
the openness toward Jews in
Amsterdam in the 1600s.
"There is still a beautiful old syna-
gogue from that era in Amsterdam
that's as big as the Protestant Church,
which is unusual," Bregstein said.
The Jews had unique freedoms then.
In Venice, for instance, the synagogues
at that time were hidden in houses.
He also became interested in his
Jewish roots in Lithuania, making a
film about his grandfather's shtetl.

Bregstein believed his whole family
was destroyed by the war, but his
research only recently uncovered at
least 50 of his grandfather's great-
grandchildren in Chicago, the
Detroit area and in Israel. Now he is
writing a book about the diaspora
story of his family.
Today, Jews are "very alert" to their
situation in the Netherlands, he said.
With the killing of filmmaker Theo
Van Gogh in Amsterdam by Islamic
extremists, many Americans ask him
about the current situation. He doesn't
ignore the problem. The Jewish mayor
of Amsterdam, Gob Cohen, who
asked all people to take a position
against hatred, is on the top of the
Islamic hit list, Bregstein said.
"The 800,000 immigrants to the
Netherlands are mostly moderate and
Islamic and integrate into society," he
said. Only a few are fanatics."
And yet, he added, in the begin-
ning, the Nazis were also just a small
group of fanatics. I1
