Seasonal Spirit?

Darkness confuses tree thieves at Jewish cemetery,
according to their statements to police.

ALAN H ITS KY
Associate Editor

F

ive University of Detroit
Mercy students, looking for
some small evergreen trees to
decorate their dormitory, will now
spend the Christmas season pondering
their legal fate.
Driving on a side street west of
Woodward Avenue around 9 p.m.
Dec. 6, the five decided to cut down
some small evergreens in a city park.
After climbing a fence, the four 18-
year-olds and one 19-year-old sawed
through two small trees and partially
sawed a third in what turned out to be
Machpelah Cemetery, which borders
the park.
"From their statements," said
Ferndale Police Detective Sergeant
Patrick Jones, "they didn't know it
was a cemetery, let alone a Jewish
cemetery." He said the students had
not been drinking.
A neighbor on St. Louis Avenue
saw the students climb the fence and
called police.
Sgt. Jones said the police have
received dozens of calls from Jewish
individuals and organizations con-
cerned that the incident was anti-
Semitic vandalism.
City Attorney Dan Christ said the
five students will be charged with
malicious destruction of property and
trespassing. A pretrial hearing will be
held in Ferndale District Court in
mid-January.
Police said the students were from
Macomb Township, Shelby Township,
Prudenville (near Grayling), Monroe
and St. Paul, Minn.
Gary Lichtman, director of media
relations at UDM, said the universi-
ty's president was angry and upset
when told of the incident. Father

Gerard Stockhausen asked UDM
officials to look into punishment for
the five students, pending
Ferndale's action.
The five students are all freshmen,
Lichtman said, completing their first
term at the 6,000-student campus in
northwest Detroit. At a minimum,
Lichtman expects UDM would
require the students to do community
service.
