Blue Fringe: Hayyim Danzig, Dov Rosenblatt, Danny Zwillenberg and Avi
Hoffman.

The band's musical background varies,
too, from Zwillenberg's five-year career
on drums to Rosenblatt's start at age 11.
He placed an ad offering his musical
services to play keyboard at private par-
ties in his hometown newspaper in
Baltimore, where his father, Gary, now
publisher-editor of New York's The
Jewish Week, was editor of the Baltimore
Jewish Times.
Rosenblatt, a self-taught pianist,
drummer and guitarist, continues to
both compose songs — from pop-rock
to reggae — as well as sing. The band's
original words and music on My
Awakening include Rosenblatt's tunes
written while he was in high school and
college. While in Israel in 1999, he
recorded the single "Flipping Out,"
which is also part of the CD.
"Our second CD is much more col-
laborative, he said of Seventy Faces, due
out this winter. "Songs on the new CD
will have a Hebrew chorus with English
words that discuss what the Hebrew
phrase means to us."

Creating A CD

My Awakening was recorded under the
direction of producer-engineer Bill
Kovatch.
"Danny and Hayyim found Bill in the
classified ads in a paper in Philadelphia
and recorded a demo with him when
they were in high school playing with a
different band," Perl said. "Bill took
Blue Fringe to Sigma Sound Studios in
Philadelphia, where he was working at
the time, to record My Awakening.
"He had worked on an album with
J.Lo [actress-singer Jennifer Lopez] in
the same room not long before," Perl
said. Kovatch also produced the group's
upcoming second CD.
Marketing the CD went smoothly,
since the group already had fans waiting
to buy it, gathered during their year-

and-a-half of performing together.
"Sameach Music, our main distribu-
tor, took 500 copies on consignment for
90 days," Perl said. 'About a week after
the CD was released, I got an order for
another 1,000 copies. In the beginning,
we were selling the CDs pretty much as
fast as we could manufacture them."
Among the songs that Rosenblatt has
written, two that are especially meaning-
ful were written as an expression of his
ties to Israel.
He wrote the CD's title song, "My
Awakening," during his two years of
learning there. "It talks about the spiritu-
al awakening kids really go through
while studying and living in Israel," he
said.
"I was back in America when I wrote
`City of Gold' in response to a wave of
bombings in Israel," he said of the song
describing both his helplessness and soli-
darity.
The group performed the song last
year in Jerusalem's Great Synagogue at a
fund-raising event for One Family Fund,
an organization providing assistance to
victims of anti-Israel terror. "Singing the
words never meant more to me than
they did that day," Rosenblatt said.
As the three Blue Fringe members
who are students get close to graduation,
Perl maintains they are not planning to
part. "They plan to stick together as
long as possible," he said.
Doing what he loves, Rosenblatt said
the success of the band was a perk.
"I never expected any of this," he said.
"It really took us by surprise, to be able
to get through to so many people."
As far as his future, the psychology
major said, "For now, I plan to follow
my dreams. Music is going well."
