Dec. 31st, 2004 1 coupon per customer EM fax B y day, they are three easy-going Yeshiva University students and a preschool teacher, but when school's out, they turn into the world- touring, CD-recording, Jewish pop rock sensation Blue Fringe. The four 20 something young men of Blue Fringe spend weekends and sum- mers on concert tours and the school week rehearsing and writing words and music to the Hebrew and English songs they perform. "We started out rehearsing in the music building at YU after classes, from about 10:30 p.m. until midnight," said Dov Rosenblatt, 23, of Teaneck, N.J., the band's rhythm guitarist, songwriter and lead singer. "It was very intense at the beginning." The New York-based group — join- ing Rosenblatt are guitarist-composer Avi Hoffman, 23, of Elizabeth, N.J.; drummer Danny Zwillenberg, 22, of Philadelphia; and bassist Hayyim Danzig, 23, of Philadelphia — describes their original music as running the gamut, from soul searching to irreverent, including a tune that uses the terms "flipping out" and shepping nachas (deriving joy) in the same line. Now, just three years after getting together, Blue Fringe is working on a second CD and has plans to spend the upcoming winter school break in England, performing in concert. This past summer, they were on the road playing in upstate New York and Pennsylvania in the early months and on tour in South Africa and Australia in August. Although they include Hebrew songs in their performances, their sing-along, stuck-in-your-head phrases make the band popular with those not familiar - TOTAL FOOD BILL Fine Italian Dining in a Casual Atmosphere SHELLI LIEBMAN DORFMAN StagW-iter 248-968-0052 with the Hebrew words. Their perform- ances have included appearances at mainstream clubs in New York, like B.B. King's Blues Club & Grill and Makor. While three songs on their breakout CD My Awakening are in English, six of the seven Hebrew tunes are performed with original music written to liturgy and well-known favorite lyrics familiar to many. Only one track does not include origi- nal words or music from the band. "Hafachta" was recorded with permis- sion from Rabbi Moshe Shur, a found- ing member of the Diaspora Yeshiva Band, said Jon Perl of Perl Productions, Inc., a YU graduate living in New York who is the group's manager and booking agent. "Rabbi Shur insisted that all of his royalties go to a specific charity in Israel." And the royalties are higher than the group expected. "Sales of the CD are way beyond our expectations," Perl said. "When we put the album out, we were hoping for sales of 5,000. As of late, we've sold around 13,000." Who Listening? Blue Fringe — named for blue-dyed fringes of the tallit (prayer shawl) — plays to crowds with varying musical interests. "Fans of all ages — teens to baby boomers — write to give kudos on the disc," Perl said. Perhaps the wide range of listeners is due to the versatility of the music, influ- enced both by Hebrew bands and the likes of Coldplay, Phish and John Mayer. Maybe it's that the group's tunes include everything from laugh-out-loud, clever social satire describing the Orthodox Jewish dating scene to mean- ingful, smooth emotional songs about Israel. 26052 Greenfield at 10 Mile Rd. • In the Lincoln Shopping Center • Open Mon-Sat. 10-9 el Jeffrey L.
