Schiff of Birmingham, Tasha Aronson
and Katie Blender of Franklin,
Amanda Zwiren of Bloomfield Hills
and Becca Kowalsky of West Bloom-
field are 17-year-old students at
Birmingham Groves High School and
best friends. They found their own
way to raise money for the Israel
Emergency Fund.
Zwiren and Aronson came up with
the idea of selling LIVE JEWISH
bracelets, similar to champion cyclist
and cancer survivor Lance
Armstrong's LIVE STRONG rubber
bracelet, which he used to raise
money for cancer research. The teens
are selling their 7,000 bracelets for a
donation of $2 or more and already
raised $200.
"People tend to forget that teens can
get passionate for something, and we
have a strong Jewish connection and
get excited about Israel," says Aronson.
"It's a big part of being Jewish."
Teens are inspired by Federation's
Teen Mission to Israel and Partnership
2000 projects in Israel's Central
Galilee, says Amy Neistein,
Federation's Israel and overseas services
associate director. She credits the
relationships developed in Israel and
here that inspires teens to get involved
in the campaign.
