and women in Israel have to serve in the
military, I wanted to have that same
experience — as if I were one of them,"
said Chasnoff.
"So I joined the Israel Defense Forces
at the age of 22 and served as a tank
gunner in the Armored Corps. I spent
many a chilly night sleeping in that
metal tank in the Golan Heights and
South Lebanon. We saw some action
and were under fire many times, and I
had some close calls, but I came out of it
OK."
Chasnoff even pulled "a Bob Hope"
by entertaining Israeli troops at many
bases around the country. Completing
his military service, he took a trip
through the rest of the Middle East,
Southeast Asia, then Europe and South
America, hitting 21 countries.
"That taught me the value of open-
mindedness and frequent-flyer miles,"
he said. "Then I returned to the
Chicago area to launch my comedy
career in earnest."
His professional career has taken him
to seven more countries, including a
USO tour of American troops in Korea
and Japan and an appearance at the
well-known Montreal Comedy Festival.
"I now play about 100 gigs a year,
mainly at comedy clubs and college
campuses," he said. He's worked with
such noted comics as Jon Stewart,
Gilbert Gottfried and Lewis Black, and
rates Steve Martin as one of his favorite
comedians.
To further his career, he moved to
New York two years ago, where he lives
with his wife, Dorit, and family.
He still has a fervent love for Israel
and is always worried about that nation's
welfare. "Solving the problems of the
Middle East must be among our major
foreign policy concerns," he stressed.
"With the death of Arafat, there may be
new hope to solve the problems there.
New Palestinian leadership might help
the situation. Israel must seize the
moment." I I
