ookies weren't
the only source
of sweetness at
the annual
Cookies 'n
Dreams event Oct. 28 at the
Somerset Collection in Troy.
Sweet smiles took center stage
as children enjoyed arts and
crafts, airbrushed tattoos,
clowns, music and dancing.
The event — and the cause
— is all about making kids
happy.
Cookies 'n Dreams is the
major fund-raiser of the Friends of
Camp Mak-A-Dream, Michigan
Chapter. Proceeds go toward send
ing Michigan children and young
adults with cancer to Montana's
Camp Mak-A-Dream, which was
founded by Harry and Sylvia
Granader of Beverly Hills.
More than 1,100 people attend-
ed the event, which raised more
than $94,000 toward its goals —
the best fund-raising effort yet.
The accent was on families, as
young and old alike went from
table to table sampling cookies

fessional bakers. It was hard not to
sample everything, yet whole —
and bitten cookies — could be
tucked away in mini shopping
bags to be munched later.
Sampling definitely brought
smiles and gave youngsters the
energy to dance to music by Star
Trax and to interact with clowns
Oopsy Daisy and Zippy.
At one point, children and teens
who had attended Camp Mak-A-
Dream took to the stage and
spoke about how meaningful the
program was to them. Many
thanked the Granaders for starting
the camp and giving them the
chance to feel "normal."
"Cookies 'n Dreams is our most
important fund-raiser," said Hadar
Granader, president of Friends of
Camp Mak-A-Dream, Michigan
Chapter. "The last three events
have each raised enough money to
send 100 children to camp for a
week. The time spent in Montana,
in many cases, is the happiest
week of their year."
Participants also voted on their
favorite cookies in a variety of cat-
egories. Best Overall Cookie and
Official 2004-2005 Camp Mak-A-
Dream Cookie went to Market
Basket of Franklin, which also
won Best-Tasting Healthy Cookie.
Debra's Delectable Delights in
Huntington Woods earned brag-
ging rights for the Most Indulgent
Cookie and Cookies by Design in
Southfield was voted the Most
Unusual and Creative Cookie.
Cathy and Nate Forbes of
Franklin chaired the event, which
honors her late father, Dr. H. John
"Tony" Jacob, who was a former
board member of the Michigan
chapter. His wife, Connie Jacob of
Franklin, now serves on the board,
and her son David Jacob and his
wife, Dana, of Franklin are on the
honorary event committee for
Cookies 'n Dreams.
As participants left the event,
with bags of cookies swinging
from their hands, it was easy to
tell a sweet time was had by all. ri
