knew I didn't want to do repetitive
work," he said. "I never wanted to
compete with the mass-produced
wall units at Home Depot or
Wal-Mart."
"My work is very, very custom fit
to each client — like a unique art,"
he said. "If someone asked me to
build a house and put furniture in it,
my style would be contemporary.
But when I design for someone else,
we talk and I work with their sense
of style."
Most of those who commission
Siegmann are in the market for built-
in wall units. "Each one is a chal-
lenge because each one is different,"
he said. "But I will make anything. I
just completed an office-den, with a
desk, table and Murphy bed."
But Siegmann doesn't only work
in residential homes. At Temple
Israel in West Bloomfield, Siegmann
designed Rabbi Paul Yedwab's
office, building a wall unit, a desk
and side tables.
"The office needed to be built
based on the taste and needs of the
rabbi," he said. "It needed to be fit-
ting for a rabbi's personal office and
also for meetings with others."
Siegmann's trademark is his work
with wood veneer, a paper-thin slice
of wood cemented to a variety of
core materials.
"It is my specialty that I try to
incorporate into any piece I make,"
said Siegmann, who recently spent
three weeks perfecting his art with a
master woodworker. He also
includes different-shaped wood
veneer inlays in some of his pieces.
Siegmann's days can be grueling.
"I run a one-man shop so I need to
put in 12 hours each workday," he
said. "I start at 4 a.m. so I can be
finished in time to pick up my son
from school. After that, I am with
my family.
"It is not an easy life," Siegmann
said. "But I have a lot of fun." I'm
like my grandfather, who was able to
make a life change. I decided I want-
ed to do something I really love and I
am vei very happy when I work." II
