ON THE COVER
MACKENZIE CODEN
Age 9
West Bloomfield
Temple Israel
M
ackenzie Coden loves art.
"It's her favorite thing" at
Walled Lake Maple
Elementary School, says her mom.
Mackenzie is the oldest of the four
children of Karen and Andy Coden,
and she created her winning artwork
for the Jewish News Chanukah Art
Contrest at home. "When I think of
Chanukah," says Mackenzie, "the first
thing that comes into my mind is the
menorah."
And just like any avid artist,, she
just happened to have popsicle sticks
around the house for art projects. The
lighted wicks of her popsicle-stick
candles are painted strings. Some of
the ends are lighter in color — where
the paint didn't take — and gives the
effect of an actual burning wick.
`Whenever I'm bored, I do art,"
says Mackenzie. I watch TV and I
also like to read — more than TV"
Her mom, Karen, says Mackenzie
has little time to be bored. She takes
five dance classes — she's been danc-
ing for six years — and she is in a
Temple Israel play and is a member of
the temple's Shabbat Singers. Last
year one of her art projects was select-
ed to represent her grade at the
Walled Lake Schools' art show.
