issues faced by older people. It assists the elderly in
living fully and also educating them on how to plan
their end-of-life care.
Advocate Lil Erdeljan of West Bloomfield began
her involvement with the center following her
father's death. "If you are terminally ill," she said,
"you can have doctors and nurses come to your
home and take care of you. You can die in your own
home. Pain management is so important."
The music distributor and mask acquisition
sponsor, Troy-based Handleman Company, worked
with well-known musicians to obtain many of the
masks. The Oct. 23 gala featured a silent auction,
dinner, a live auction and an afterglow.

The Hospice of Metro Denver originated the
mask project in 1998. HOM brought it to southeast
Michigan this year. GM was the presenting sponsor,
hosting the event in the GM Vehicle Engineering
Center at the GM Tech Center in Warren.
GM donated a 2005 Cadillac STS to a raffle,
combined with auctions and tickets sales brought in
close to $300,000. HOM is the second largest inde-
pendent, nonprofit hospice in the nation, serving
more than 900 patients a day.
"The Jewish people are very involved with hos-
pice because it is such an important cause," said
honorary committee member Mark Burnstein of
West Bloomfield.
