Becker, whose work has been on
view at the Birmingham Bloomfield
Art Center and with area group
exhibits. "I always wanted to work
with pottery and started with night
classes 10 years ago."
Becker, who considers herself an
outdoor person who is very open
about her love for animals, reveals
that her ceramics approach often
reflects her home environment,
where she looks after a dog, frogs
and fish. Trained in nursing, she
started pottery by taking night class-
es at the BBAC.
"I've made a menorah for myself,"
says Becker, a member of
Congregation Shir Tikvah. "Before I
started working with pottery, I
worked with leaded glass. I love
being creative, and I find the arts
very relaxing."
Lonnie Bodzin of Southfield, an
emergency room doctor, finds pot-
tery gives him an alternate lifestyle.

"I want to make people smile with
my work," says Arkin, who does
spoon rests with smiling faces.
"What I design can be functional
and whimsical."
Arkin has sent Gerties around the
country. After giving them to
friends, she got orders from people
who wanted to give facsimiles to
their friends.
Art fairs at Temple Israel, where
Arkin is a member, have included
the lighthearted pieces. Other fairs,
such as one sponsored by the
Birmingham Temple, also have fea-
tured Arkin's work.
"One idea leads to another," says
Arkin, who considers her OCC stu-
dio colleagues to be family. "I espe-
cially like bright colors."

"I like using intense colors," says
Bodzin, who has shown his ceramics
at a gallery in northern Michigan
but usually gives away his projects.
"I started studying at the BBAC and
went on to get a degree in pottery at
OCC."
Bodzin, a member of Temple
Emanu-El, has made seder plates
and wine cups as gifts, but the bulk
of his work does not have religious
themes. He plans on doing some
new projects using tiles.
"Pottery is a way of communicat-
