After scanning the photographs on quarter-
sized discs of transparent acetate, Astman
attached the images to festive lights. She
then projected the faces onto the surfaces of

large
part of it," explains Astman.
"The projection makes it ephemeral.
It makes you think about history
and about memory.
"These images are just barely
there, just like memory. It gets con-
voluted in our minds; we remember
things differently from how things
happen. Just like the first photo that
I saw in the newspaper, which
looked like such a happy group. A
photograph doesn't always tell you
what you think it's going to.
"Even if visitors to the exhibition
don't realize that these subjects are
Jewish, I hope that they will pick up
at least a sense of history or memo-
ry.
Oddly, Astman admits, as she was
working on this project, she kept
finding herself humming the song
"Clementine."
"I've always thought of it being
such a sad song," she says. "I kept
thinking of the lights and the faces,
and thinking of the song, and it just
made sense." And so she titled the
installation Clementine Part I.
In the end, though, Astman
looked up the lyrics for the song.
And although the original lyrics are
quite melancholy, "the later lyrics
have the narrator very sad over los-
ing his Clementine, but then he
ends up going after her little sister.
It's a little weird," she says. "But I
still liked the title for the show."
"Clementine Part I" will be
exhibited at the Art Gallery of
Windsor through Dec. 16. For
