Look where ifs taken you. 906280 oody Guthrie is a-smilin' in his grave. Lyrics for eight of his Jewish-themed songs have been uncovered and set to music by the Klezmatics. Though not Jewish, legendary folk singer Guthrie developed his Yiddishe hup from his mother-in-law Aliza Greenblatt, a noted Yiddish poet. Because of his marriage, Guthrie became very involved with the Coney Island Jewish community. Guthrie wrote songs about Chanukah, about Jewish history and spiritual life, and about World War II and the anti-fascist cause. These songs, however, sat forgotten in archives after his death in 1967. In 1998, the "lost" lyrics were dis- covered by Guthrie's daughter, Nora, who was so taken by them that she contacted the Klezmatics, who were charged with writing new music for them. The six-member New York-based band took the challenge and hon- ored Guthrie's memory by creating music that seamlessly blends Guthrie's folk and bluegrass roots with the band's bent toward lively Eastern European Jewish tunes. The result is a CD titled Woody Guthrie's Happy Joyous Hanuha, with Nora Guthrie as executive producer. The CD comes packaged in a cover that's hand pressed on antique presses at the Chicago Print Museum and folds to make a large dreidel. Individual songs are listed on two sides of the 4 4 dreidel, paired with the Hebrew let- ters hay, nun, gimel and shin. There are eight songs — one for each night. Some sound more like traditional klezmer music, with its wild clarinets and horns and soaring fiddle. Others sound more like American folk music, very much in the vein of what Guthrie might have written and performed. Some favorites are "The Many and the Few," which is a musical history lesson; "Hanuka Dance," "Happy Joyous Hanuka" and "Hanuka's Flames." The Klezmatics began in New York's East Village in 1986. Band members are Matt Darriau, Lisa Gutkin, David Licht, Frank London, Paul Morrissett and Lorin Sklamberg. Woody Guthrie's Happy Joyous Hanuka can only be purchased online. Cost is $18.
